Today’s exercise is encouragement.  There is much uncertainty going around, the hectic holiday schedule, the upcoming new year and the rumor that today is the last day of our existence.  Tweet a positive quote, make an upbeat Facebook status, blog something cheerful and encouraging.

One year ago today, we visited the Mayan Ruins in the Yucatan Peninsula and were educated on “THE” calendar, where all the Mayans went and why all these pyramids were abandoned.  The calendar goes in cycles, and today simply means the end of a 5,125 year-long cycle and tomorrow is the start of another cycle.  The Mayans were not taken by Martians, they simply migrated to other areas because their natural resources ran out, thus the abandoned pyramids.  So basically, they ran out of water, fertile soil, animals and harvest so they all went in different directions.  By the time they went to other cities, towns and areas, they adapted to the way of living in their new environment and were mostly ruled by the Spaniards – who had their own King and Queen to serve and would not hear of sacrificing the captain of the football team from a 4 foot 11 inch tall man!

Lots of interesting facts learned that week but in a nut shell… everything’s gonna be okay.  Have a great weekend everyone!

Kids are so much better at being friendly!  It’s sad we have to tell them not to talk to strangers, be cautious of people who may harm them and to watch out for bad people.  I hope there’s still that kid in you who wants to hug everyone, because today’s exercise is to be friendly.

I’m grateful for…
Yogurt shops that have mastered fat-free and sugar-free ice cream tasting treats!  That I am not lactose intolerant.  Hot summer days, when ice cream seems to be the only solution to cooling down.

I’m letting go of…
Thinking ice cream is just for desert.

Ok, so there are a few people who don’t love ice cream like some of us do, but can you imagine a world without it?  There’s something about eating ice cream that makes me feel like a kid, every lick down to your fingers always brings back some happy childhood memory.  Not to mention how yummy it is!  When was the last time you enjoyed a scoop or two?

I’m grateful for…
The joy I feel when I’m dancing.  The calories I burn when I dance to my favorite tunes (I love disco!) while I’m cleaning the house or cooking and making a mess in the kitchen.  The rhythm and the right foot my husband has developed, now I don’t feel like I’m dancing with a pendulum (I love you honey).

I’m letting go of…
Thinking I’m too old to go out dancing with my girl friends.  The fear of line dancing.  Dreaming that one day I will learn the Argentinian Tango.  Tried it, failed it – I’m sticking to the electric slide.

The use of my hands.  With it, I can hold my husband’s hand when we go for walks… paint my daughter’s toe nails, while she paints mine… make a feast, toast to life and hold a wine glass… unwrap chocolate… caress a baby’s soft cheek… comfort a friend… close a business deal… take pictures… draw… paint… create… give… I can keep going!

Taking my hands for granted and take care of it better.

The re-discovery of happiness … day 28

Today, I’m posting pictures from my wedding, because of two things.  In them are who I am most thankful for (My girls, hubby and our family) and it’s my anniversary!

We got married on a Thursday afternoon in an old man’s living room.  We found him in the yellow pages after we decided to elope and decided against Vegas.  With us were my daughter, my best friend and her husband.  When we got there, we saw signs stating “We notarize, take passport pictures, have P.O. boxes and make keys!”  Oh great!

Then this old man opens the door.  He looked like he was a hundred years old!  Anyway, to make a long story short, we picked ceremony A – quick and easy as opposed to B (tear jerker) or C (long and drawn out).

Every 3 years we get re-married.  In Las Vegas at a drive through chapel.  In Laguna Niguel at the Ritz Carlton (the real one, where I got to wear a gown and got walked down the aisle).  At a community church and at the beach in Klaloch on a Sunday morning when nobody was awake – just the beach, the sea mist, my hubby and I.  We take turns planning the wedding so it’s a surprise to the other.   Next year will be hubby’s turn.  I suggested jumping out of a plane, he said “Heck NO!” He’s afraid of heights, I guess that would be a problem!


Happy Anniversary my love!  I am so thankful I get to grow old with you.  You are definitely proof that God had better plans for me.  He blessed me with you, my joy.

Advice to my younger self…

A child can ask questions that a wise man cannot answer.  ~Author Unknown

“If I knew then, what I know now.”  How many times have you said that to yourself and what would that knowledge change?  Here’s my top 10:

  1. A penny saved is a penny earned.  Don’t be an emotional spender.  Learn to be frugal.
  2. Listen to your parents, they want what’s best for you.  Rebellion comes back to bite you, when your kids are teenagers.
  3. Don’t light up that first cigarette.
  4. You are an amazing person, you’re not a failure.
  5. Learn proper nutrition and learn to love exercise.
  6. It’s not always about you.
  7. Don’t worry too much.
  8. Joy is about balance, not things.
  9. Your family comes first, the promotion can wait.
  10. God’s got your back… always.

I don’t know if knowing all that when I was younger would have made a difference.  Well… maybe a few extra zeroes in my savings account, but I think that learning as I went through life is what made me who I am today.  The woman my husband is crazy about, the mom my kids love (although she’s the neighborhood nut), the girl my parents respect and the person I like (most of the time).

When life gets to you and you feel like walking away from it all, remember… you’re not alone.  If you think you’ve run out of solutions and your problems are too much to handle, remember… you’re not alone.  Although you’ve hit the bottom, and climbing back up seems impossible, remember… you’re not alone.  If there is no one else to turn to and you feel no one will understand, remember… you’re not alone.  Have you forgotten about me?  Has the world taken you so far, that we’ve become strangers?  I want you to stop… breathe… listen to your heart beating… give me your burdens and rest.  Tomorrow is a new day with new possibilities.  Live to love, give, serve and be thankful.  I am here to keep you steady and strong as you face the most difficult days of your life.  I am always with you, remember… you’re not alone.  Love always, JC

Living in the Pacific Northwest, we’re never short of it.  It was one of the things that kept me from moving here.  But now, it is one of the reasons I love it here.  Rain may resemble gloom to some, but when those little silver drops come down from the sky…

Let’s not forget a rainy weekend gives us an excuse to sit by the fire and be lazy, read a book, spend some true quality family time.  There’s an upside to everything.

The perfect complement to a rainy day is my bacon clam chowder with cheddar garlic biscuits.

Begging for food isn’t easy.  If I sit still like this… bat my eye lashes like this… smile a little like this… will it work?  By the way, I don’t like veggies anymore.  The lettuce you gave me the other day gave me the runs!  This girl needs her proteins (hint).

Remember when we were kids and we dreamt of being “Someone” some day?  I believe that we all have our own purpose and the desire has been planted in us long before we even knew right from wrong.  Then life happens and we play the cards we are dealt, right?  Well who said you can’t walk away and play at another table or even start your own game?  We are all victims of fear.  Fear we learned from past mistakes, pain life threw our way and the shame we had to face.

Rewind back to that place and time you had a moment of clarity before all this fear settled in.  When you had a dream so big you never questioned yourself.  If you don’t remember that moment then dig deeper.  It’s there and once you find it then make it day one of your journey to fulfilling it.
